Signs of Jinn Possession and Ruqyah for Jinn Explained
The jinn are part of Allah's creation, and their reality is confirmed in the Qur'an. For many sisters and brothers who come to us, the fear that a jinn is affecting them can feel overwhelming, especially when unexplained struggles will not lift. What follows are the honest signs of jinn possession as understood in the Sunnah, the real medical overlap that no serious Raqi ignores, and how authentic ruqyah for jinn is performed one to one over Zoom, so that anyone can reach a qualified Raqi wherever they are. Every claim here is drawn from the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, by the permission of Allah.
What the Qur'an tells us about the jinn
Allah has dedicated a whole surah, Surah Al-Jinn (72), to establishing that the jinn are real, that some of them are righteous and some are wrongdoers, and that they too are called to submit to their Lord. He says: "And indeed there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, but they only increased them in sin and disbelief" (Surah Al-Jinn, 72:6).
Being cautious here is important. Not every difficulty is caused by the jinn, and Islam gives us a clear framework: turn to Allah first, and seek the means He has permitted, recitation, remembrance, and medical treatment where it is needed. The unseen is not something a person can weigh up for themselves, which is why guessing helps no one. What settles it is a proper assessment by a trained Raqi, alongside ruling out the medical causes. If you are still learning about ruqyah itself, our foundational article on what is ruqyah according to Islam is the right place to start. For another affliction the Prophet ﷺ warned against, see our guide to the evil eye in Islam.
Signs of jinn possession
These are the signs we see most often in sessions. None of them is conclusive on its own, and every one of them has a non-spiritual explanation that must be ruled out first. If what you are noticing points more to a general need for ruqyah than to jinn affliction specifically, see also 10 signs you may need ruqyah.
Signs that appear during Qur'anic recitation
When there is a reaction during recitation, it can tell a trained Raqi a great deal. But a reaction is not required: some afflictions, especially certain types of sihr, show none at all, so no reaction does not mean nothing is wrong. When authentic ruqyah is being recited over a person, and there is genuine affliction from a jinn, signs can include:
Severe headache, often settling in one place, which eases when the recitation stops
Nausea, chest tightness, or a rising heat that comes on during the recitation
Involuntary movements, tremors, or unusual crying that begins only during the recitation
A change in the voice of the afflicted person, or speech that is not their own
Sudden strong reactions of rage, dread or aversion as the recitation continues
A trained Raqi looks for these responses under controlled conditions, not on the basis of what a person felt at home last night.
Jinn possession symptoms and signs outside recitation
These come up again and again in what people describe to us before a session:
Persistent nightmares of the same kind: being chased, falling, snakes or dogs, high places, or the dead
Waking with unexplained bruises or marks a doctor cannot account for
A sudden and strong aversion to Salah and to reciting the Qur'an
Physical symptoms that persist while every test comes back clear
A sudden change in personality with no clear cause
Feeling blocked in marriage, work or life despite your best efforts
Constant tension and arguments at home that start over nothing
What is not a reliable sign
Feeling low on a hard day
Occasional bad dreams
Sleep paralysis on its own, which proves nothing by itself, though it can appear alongside other signs
Any single one of the signs above, standing alone without a wider pattern
Anything a fortune-teller, an amulet-seller, or a self-appointed healer has told you
Cultural practices are not from Islam. Hanging strings and tokens, wearing or hanging amulets of any kind, and going to those who claim to tell you your future or who ask for your mother's name and date of birth. Reject all of it. Authentic ruqyah is from the Qur'an, the authentic du'as of the Prophet ﷺ, and the names and attributes of Allah. Nothing else.
Signs a jinn is attached to you or your home
The Qur'an describes a person struck by Shaytan through his touch:
لَا يَقُومُونَ إِلَّا كَمَا يَقُومُ ٱلَّذِي يَتَخَبَّطُهُ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسِّۚ
"...as one stands who has been struck by Shaytan into madness through his touch" (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:275).
The Prophet ﷺ also said: "Shaytan flows through a person as blood flows" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2038). He said this about the whispers Shaytan casts into the mind, and it shows how close Shaytan can come.
Allah teaches us to seek refuge from exactly this:
وَقُل رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنۡ هَمَزَٰتِ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحۡضُرُونِ
"And say: My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the promptings of the devils, and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, from their being present with me" (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:97 to 98).
The signs of a jinn affecting a person overlap with the signs of sihr, so there is no hard and fast rule, and every case has to be assessed on its own. When a jinn has affected a person through mass (touch), it most often shows in their mental state: they become disorientated and unsettled, mentally and psychologically.
An ashiq jinn
An ashiq jinn, a jinn attached to a person out of desire, is one of the most common problems we treat. We assess what lies behind it: how it came to be there in the first place, and why it has attached itself to that person. The treatment plan is then built around what we find, by the permission of Allah.
An ashiq jinn is an attachment rather than mass, and its signs are different. They tend to centre on the intimate side of life: problems in the private area, intimacy affected within a marriage, and repeated wet dreams. It can also show as an inability to get married, not finding the right spouse, or a marriage that struggles from the very first day.
A jinn in the home
When a jinn is in the home rather than attached to a person, the signs stay with the house: a heaviness in one room, the whole household unsettled, children who will not sleep in a particular place, or arguments that flare as soon as people walk in. These can have ordinary explanations too, so they are assessed like any other sign.
The Sunnah gives every home its protection. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person mentions Allah on entering his home and before eating, Shaytan tells his companions there is no place for them to stay and no dinner (Sahih Muslim 2018). And he said: "Do not make your houses graves. Shaytan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited" (Sahih Muslim 780).
Signs of a jinn leaving the body
Lists online often claim that yawning, burping or vomiting during ruqyah proves a jinn has left. Nothing in the Qur'an or Sunnah establishes that, and one reaction in one session proves nothing either way.
Nor can a jinn's own words be relied on. A jinn can say "I am leaving" and remain. Some people are told that dozens of jinn were taken out of them, yet they are still suffering, because the jinn never left and there were never that many in the first place. Beliefs like these keep a person in a cycle of fear for years. That is not how ruqyah works.
A Raqi who is well versed in this work, and has built up his own spirituality through years of practice, can sense the presence of a jinn and notice when it leaves. This is not knowledge of the unseen. It is experience, by the permission of Allah. Alongside it, we look at the whole picture over time: the signs fading and the person returning to themselves. A lack of reaction proves nothing on its own, because some afflictions, especially certain types of sihr, show no reaction at all. That is why we follow each case through to the end.
Not every problem is spiritual
Many of the signs above overlap with medical and psychological conditions that respond to proper treatment:
Anxiety and panic disorders can produce chest tightness, dread, nightmares, and a sense of a heavy presence.
Depression can cause aversion to worship, loss of motivation, and unexplained low mood.
Sleep paralysis, hallucinations as you fall asleep, and vivid dreaming are well studied and can occur in healthy people.
Neurological conditions such as seizures, migraines and thyroid disorders can produce dramatic physical symptoms.
Trauma can present as many of the signs listed above.
The mistake we see too often is the opposite of the popular one: people who assume everything is spiritual, delay medical care, and become more unwell. A qualified Raqi will always encourage a medical assessment alongside ruqyah, never instead of it. If you have not seen a doctor and your symptoms are affecting your daily life, please see one as well as considering ruqyah. Shifāʼ belongs to Allah, and He has placed shifāʼ in the means He has permitted: recitation, du'a, and lawful medicine. Our article on ruqyah for anxiety and depression covers this line more fully.
Book an assessment for a jinn affliction
What authentic ruqyah for jinn is

Ruqyah for jinn is the recitation of the Qur'an, authentic prophetic du'as, and the names and attributes of Allah over the afflicted person, by the permission of Allah. It is not magic. It is not a battle of wills between a Raqi and an entity. It is asking Allah, through the Qur'an He revealed, to remove harm.
Recitations commonly used include:
Surah Al-Fatihah (1)
Ayat al-Kursi (2:255). The Prophet ﷺ said, as narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari, that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi at night has a protector from Allah and no shaytan comes near him until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).
The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285-286)
Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), Surah Al-Falaq (113) and Surah An-Nas (114). The Prophet ﷺ recited these three before sleep, into his palms and passed over his body, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 5017. Al-Falaq and An-Nas are known together as the Mu'awwidhatayn, the two of seeking refuge, and the Prophet ﷺ said that none seek refuge with the like of them.
Selected passages of Surah Al-Baqarah, Surah Al-Saffat (37:1-10), Surah Ad-Dukhan (44), and Surah Al-Jinn (72), among others.
Each session should leave you closer to Allah's Book, not shaken by theatrics. Authentic ruqyah is calm, from the Qur'an and Sunnah, and never asks for personal items such as clothing or hair.
Self-ruqyah
Self-ruqyah, reciting the Mu'awwidhatayn, Ayat al-Kursi, and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah morning and evening, is a Sunnah and a right for every Muslim. It has limits, though. When signs persist and are affecting your life, the honest advice is that a trained Raqi's assessment is needed. Self-ruqyah is a first step, not the destination.
How online ruqyah for jinn works
Our sessions are online, over Zoom, and strictly one to one, in a private setting where you can speak openly. The recitation of the Qur'an is not diminished by distance. Its effect is by the permission of Allah and reaches you wherever you are.
What the session looks like in practice:
We start by talking through what you are experiencing and how things reached this point.
A one-to-one Zoom session with your Raqi, in a quiet room where you will not be interrupted.
Extended Qur'anic recitation, with your Raqi observing your responses.
Guidance afterwards on daily du'as and protective recitation.
Where ongoing treatment is needed, your Raqi will talk you through our full structured Wellness Plan, followed and reviewed with you week by week.
Sessions are held in English, and we also speak Urdu, Gujarati and Hindi.
How we can help
You do not need to be certain that a jinn is the cause to book a session. If the signs above match your experience and are persistent, we will assess honestly, recite over you, and give you a clear plan. If we suspect the cause is medical, we will tell you plainly and encourage you to see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions
Is sleep paralysis a sign of jinn possession?
Not on its own. Sleep paralysis is a well-studied medical phenomenon of REM-sleep transition. Many practising Muslims experience it and it is not automatically spiritual. If it happens alongside a wider pattern of the signs above, it is worth looking at properly, and a medical review is still sensible.
Is "jinn removal" the same as ruqyah?
Many people call it jinn removal, and what they are looking for is real. It is done through ruqyah, and it is not the same everywhere. We assess first, we treat with the Qur'an, and we set a plan that is followed and reviewed with you week by week rather than left after one session. Twenty years of treating this has taught us that structure is what changes things, and shifāʼ is by the permission of Allah.
Can ruqyah be performed online, or must it be in person?
Ruqyah is the recitation of the Qur'an. Its benefit is by the permission of Allah and is not bound by physical proximity. Our sessions are online over Zoom, one to one, and the effect of authentic recitation reaches you wherever you are.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies from person to person. Ruqyah is not a fixed science, and nobody can tell you in advance how long it will take. Some see a clear shift after one session. Others need a course of treatment, which is where the Wellness Plan comes in. What we can tell you is that you will not be left guessing between sessions.
How do I know if a jinn is attached to me or my home?
There is no hard and fast rule, because the signs overlap with sihr and with medical causes. A jinn affecting a person through touch most often unsettles their mental state, an ashiq jinn tends to affect intimacy and marriage, and a jinn in the home shows in the house itself. A proper assessment is what settles it.
What are the signs of a jinn leaving the body?
Nothing in the Qur'an or Sunnah makes yawning, burping or vomiting proof that a jinn has left, and a jinn's own words cannot be relied on. Reactions are not a reliable marker either way, as some afflictions show none at all. A well-versed Raqi can pinpoint what is really happening and sense when a jinn leaves, by the permission of Allah.
Medical disclaimer
Signs and symptoms of this kind can overlap with medical and psychological conditions. This is not medical advice and does not replace assessment or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional. If you are experiencing significant physical, mental, or emotional distress, please speak to a doctor alongside seeking authentic ruqyah.
